Tuscany's Revered Brunello di Montalcino

Castello Tricerchi Brunello di Montalcino

2017 Castello Tricerchi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Brunello di Montalcino, one of the true protagonists in the history of Italian wine, has built a worthy reputation as the rarest, most expensive, and longest-lived wine in Tuscany. In the middle of the 18th century, this distinct Sangiovese vine hailing from Montalcino was recognised for its superior potential.

Consequently, efforts to produce premium wine with an eye towards export commenced, with an impressive new style being released after several years of aging. This was a highly unique offering at the time, as most of the area's wines were sweet and white, while the reds in neighbouring Chianti were generally light and unlikely to age well.

The results achieved in Montalcino were such that even after the phylloxera disaster wiped out vineyards throughout Europe in the late 19th century, a dedicated champion, Tancredi Biondi Santi, followed in the footsteps of earlier generations, and faithfully replanted this special vine, becoming a critical link from the Brunello pioneers of the past to what is now recognised consistently as one of the finest wines on the world stage.

Generally deeper in colour and higher in tannins than most Tuscan Sangiovese, Brunello is cherished for its distinct character, structure and cellaring potential. Current DOCG requirements stipulate that Brunello cannot be released until January 1st of the fifth year after harvesting.

Castello Tricerchi is an historic estate on the north side of Montalcino, centred around a castle that was constructed by the Tricerchi family in the 15th century. The former castle dungeons have now been converted into wine cellars, and the 13 hectares of vineyards on the property are planted solely with Brunello for the production of their Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines.

Coming from the warm 2017 vintage, the Castello Tricerchi Brunello is made from 100% hand-harvested Sangiovese (Brunello) grapes. Ruby red in the glass with great clarity. On the nose, ripe cherry, blood orange and balsamic notes are evident. The palate is intense and structured, medium-bodied with silky tannins and enough acidity to ensure continued development when cellared appropriately.
